Lips and Their Types

Four common lip types and their corresponding beautification solutions

Lips are one of the most important facial features when it comes to overall attractiveness. The shape, fullness, symmetry, and proportion of the lips in relation to other facial features have a significant impact on appearance.
There are different types of lips, and not everyone fits neatly into a single category. However, below, we introduce the most common lip types and explain the most suitable beautification methods for each. If your lips do not fit into any of these categories, you can contact us for personalized advice and guidance on the best approach for you.
It is worth noting that lip beautification methods can be either invasive or non invasive.

1. Full Lips

Full lips, with a thickness of more than 7 millimetres in both the upper and lower lips, are among the most popular lip shapes today. Many people who naturally have thin lips and desire fuller lips often need to inject a significant amount of filler. However, it is important to know that the more filler is injected, the higher the risk of side effects. Some of the possible side effects of lip filler injections include:

● Uneven lips
● Excessive firmness of the lips, which may feel uncomfortable when kissing
● Artificial looking or so called “sausage shaped” lips
● Possible infections due to large amounts of filler
● Periodic swelling caused by hormonal changes and fluctuations in blood electrolytes

A better alternative to filler: Lip grafting

If your lip thickness is already suitable and you only want to increase their volume, I recommend using a lip graft from your own body tissue. This method is a better alternative for lip augmentation for the following reasons:
● It does not have the side effects associated with filler injections (such as periodic swelling, etc.)
● It provides a natural and permanent result
● It does not require repeated treatments
In cases where both the lip volume and the thickness of the vermilion (the red part of the lips) are insufficient, lip grafting can be combined with direct lip lift surgery to increase lip thickness. Unlike filler, which can feel different from natural lips when touched, the texture of grafted lips feels completely natural.

2. Thin Lips

Thin lips were very popular in the past, but today, fewer people favorite them. This lip type only harmonizes well with very delicate and slender faces. If someone with a wide or full face has thin lips, this lack of proportion can reduce the overall attractiveness of the face.
Some individuals, despite having naturally beautiful lips, prefer thin lips. It is important to recognize that personal taste and cultural beliefs vary greatly in this regard. I have had many clients from western provinces who, due to their spouse’s dissatisfaction with the fullness and size of their lips, came to have their lips made thinner even considering lip thinning as a condition for continuing their marital life.
Those who are unhappy with their thin lips can use various methods to achieve the lips they desire. These methods are discussed in different sections of this website.

Interesting Experience

One of my clients, a woman with a wide face and very thin lips, initially believed that to make her face more attractive, she would need jaw surgery to reduce the lower jaw angle. However, she was unwilling to undergo extensive surgery and high costs. By simply enhancing her lips and using a lip graft, she noticed a significant improvement in her facial appearance and completely decided against jaw surgery.

Warning About Filler Injections in Very Thin Lips

In individuals with very thin and low volume lips, filler injections can lead to more noticeable and undesirable side effects compared to average cases. The most important of these include:

● Formation of palpable lumps of filler
● Unevenness when smiling or speaking
● Visible or palpable fibrous tissue left from repeated filler injections
In such cases, it is recommended either to use a small amount of filler or to prevent the above side effects by using a lip graft or surgical methods.

3.Round (Pouty) Lips

This lip type is a combination of full lips and a small mouth. Some people naturally have such lips, but many women dream of having pouty lips.

How to Achieve Pouty Lips?

Filler injections in the central part of the lips can create a pouty appearance.
● Another option is cosmetic lip surgery combined with a graft in the central part of the lips.
These techniques create an optical illusion, making the lips appear fuller and the mouth slightly smaller. If a smaller mouth is still desired, mouth reduction surgery can be performed separately as a second stage.
Dr. Akbar Bayat’s Recommendation: In most cases, filler injections or surgery for creating pouty lips are sufficient. Although I have performed mouth reduction surgery for some clients who were happy and satisfied with the results, I personally do not recommend this procedure to anyone.

4. Wide Lips

These lips are usually seen in people with a broad facial structure or a large mouth. In Western countries, this lip type is more common, and some people find it very attractive. In individuals with beautiful teeth, wide lips combined with a full denture smile can make the face look particularly charming and appealing. (image)
If you have wide lips and wish to modify them, there are several combined approaches (including reducing mouth width and reshaping the lips). My primary recommendation is to first address dental imperfections and correct any orthodontic issues before performing cosmetic adjustments.

Each person’s lip shape is unique. Your lips may be a combination of several types or entirely different from the categories mentioned above. The important point is that the beauty of your lips should be in harmony with the other features of your face.
The most common lip beautification methods include:

● Filler injections
● Lip grafting
● Lip augmentation surgery (direct lip lift and central lip lift)
