Forehead reduction

The forehead accounts for the upper third of the face and, due to its proximity to the eyes (which are the primary focal point of the face), plays a crucial role in making the face appear youthful and attractive.
In individuals with excessively long foreheads, not only is the proportion of the forehead to the lower part of the face disrupted, but the person also appears older.

One of the key factors in forehead attractiveness is the distance between the eyebrows and the hairline (forehead length). An excessively long forehead disrupts the facial harmony.

A receding hairline is the primary cause of a long forehead. The position of the hairline is determined by both genetic and acquired factors. In some individuals, the hairline naturally recedes, resulting in an excessively long forehead from a young age. Additionally, in men, hair loss with age causes the hairline to recede, leading to a longer forehead. Regardless of the cause, there are methods to correct an elongated forehead.

What are the beauty standards for the forehead?

Numerous criteria for forehead beauty have been discussed elsewhere on this site. This text focuses on the dimensions of a normal forehead.

The normal distance between the hairline and eyebrows (forehead length) is approximately 5-8 centimeters. Experience has shown that in women, a forehead closer to the minimum normal distance (5 centimeters) results in a younger and more attractive appearance. For women with delicate faces, a forehead length of 4.5 centimeters may also be suitable, but it’s important to note that a forehead shorter than this can diminish attractiveness. In most women, a forehead longer than 6 centimeters tends to have more negative aesthetic effects.

In men, due to larger facial features, a longer forehead is considered more normal, and measurements of 7-8 centimeters still harmonize with other facial components. With age and male pattern hair loss, the forehead lengthens, making the face appear older and less attractive.

Note: In individuals with thin and elongated faces, a long forehead has a more negative impact, making the face appear longer. Therefore, one of the effective solutions to correct this imbalance is to reduce the length of the forehead.

In addition to forehead length, the width of the forehead (the distance from the end of the eyebrow or the side of the eye to the hairline at the temples) also plays a significant role in facial beauty. This distance is usually 2.5 to 4.5 centimeters but can sometimes be up to 5 centimeters in larger faces.
In essence, the text discusses the ideal dimensions of a forehead for both men and women, highlighting the impact of forehead length and width on overall facial aesthetics. It also mentions the factors that contribute to a long forehead, such as genetics and aging, and suggests potential solutions for those seeking to correct an elongated forehead.

The wider the distance between the ends of the eyebrows and the hairline at the temples, beyond the normal range, the upper part of the face appears wider, reducing facial attractiveness. A wide forehead not only makes a person look older but also gives the face a cold and lifeless appearance.

Some individuals are born with an excessively wide forehead, while in others, it develops over time, often as a result of aging. One cause of an acquired wide forehead is the use of outdated or inappropriate facial lift surgery techniques.

Some women try to conceal this aesthetic issue (to reduce the width of the upper part of their face) by styling their hair around their face (as shown below) to hide this imperfection.

Why does a long forehead reduce facial attractiveness?

The eyes are the most important focal point and source of facial attractiveness. Anything that enhances the beauty of the eyes is sure to be popular, especially among women. The variety of eye makeup products, the different styles of glasses available, and the constantly changing trends in eye makeup all confirm that the eyes are the center of attention on the face.

Any noticeable imperfection on the forehead, due to its proximity to the eyes, can draw attention away from the eyes. A long forehead can easily diminish the attractiveness of the eyes, while a standard, beautiful forehead draws attention to the eyes.

As seen in the image above, the beauty of the eye color is less noticeable with this long forehead.

Many women are well aware of the importance of a beautiful forehead in enhancing facial attractiveness and use various techniques, such as changing their hairstyle around the forehead, to make their face look its best. We will discuss this further below.

What are some temporary methods to make the forehead appear shorter?

Many women have discovered that by making their forehead appear smaller, they can enhance the attractiveness of their eyes. Bangs, floral crowns, and even headbands can help to draw attention to the eyes by making the forehead appear shorter

Since a shorter forehead makes one appear younger, making the forehead appear shorter also gives the face a more youthful (or ‘baby face’) look.

Men are also aware of the positive effects of a shorter forehead and use various methods to make their foreheads appear shorter, essentially concealing hair loss (or baldness), which is a cause of a longer forehead. Hats, hair transplants, and wigs are commonly used by men to make their foreheads appear shorter. In colder months, headbands can also help to shorten the appearance of the forehead.

What are the non-surgical methods to shorten the forehead and reduce the width of the upper part of the face?

Non-surgical solutions for forehead imperfections primarily involve methods to conceal the issue. These methods typically focus on hairstyles, makeup, or the use of accessories for the upper part of the face, such as hats, crowns, and headbands.

As seen in the image above, the forehead and the sides of the eyes are covered by hair. This not only makes the face look very delicate and attractive but also completely conceals any imperfections in these areas. Underneath this hair, there might be a wide, long forehead, burn marks, scars from accidents, or previous surgeries.

Although the above solutions effectively hide imperfections and are widely used among women, they have limitations. These solutions are temporary and often limit one’s choices. For example, someone who has hidden their facial imperfections with an updo cannot simply pull their hair back into a ponytail.

For men, many of these solutions are not feasible, limiting their options to hats, headbands, and a few similar items.

What are the permanent options?

● Hair transplant
● Forehead reduction surgery

Hair transplants and forehead reduction surgery are two different but permanent solutions for correcting a short forehead. We will discuss these in detail below.

What are the results of hair transplants in women?

Unlike men who are almost always very satisfied with the results of hair transplants, the results of hair transplants in women fall into two very different categories.

● The first group includes those who, like men, are very satisfied with the results of hair transplant surgery. This group often includes individuals who have low hair density and have undergone hair transplants to increase hair density, and they usually achieve their desired results.

● The second group, who are very dissatisfied, includes those who have undergone hair transplants to advance their hairline. After the hair transplant, due to the significant difference between the transplanted hair and the original hair around the forehead, they observe a new aesthetic problem that is more unpleasant for them than having a long and wide forehead. Therefore, they are forced to take measures to correct the new aesthetic issue.

As can be seen, this young woman, after a hair transplant, tried to return her forehead to its pre-transplant state using laser treatment, but the unpleasant skin changes are still visible after 2 years.

Why do hair transplants to shorten the forehead often lead to dissatisfaction in women?

There are three main differences between transplanted hair and natural hair around the forehead that cause women to be dissatisfied with the results of shortening the forehead using this method:

1. Density Discrepancy: Women who undergo hair transplants solely to shorten their foreheads often have high hair density behind their hairline. It’s well-known that transplanted hair cannot achieve the exact same density in the front of the head. This difference in density causes the transplanted area to appear as an incongruous patch on the forehead.
2. Hair Texture Disparity: In most women, the hair around the forehead is much finer and more delicate than the hair at the back of the head. Since hair transplants primarily use donor hair from the back of the head, the transplanted hair is thicker. When the transplanted hair is placed next to the natural hair, the incongruous patch on the forehead becomes more noticeable.
3. Hair Texture Difference: In many women, the natural hair around the forehead is straight, while the transplanted hair tends to be wavy. This makes it easy to distinguish the clump of hair that grows after the transplant from the surrounding hair.

How is forehead reduction surgery performed?

Through surgery, we can move the hairline forward, thus reducing the length of the forehead. This method has become particularly popular among women, and many women who complain about an excessively prominent upper part of the forehead have achieved satisfactory results.

Among men, this method has also recently gained more attention. Many men, due to sagging eyebrows or a protruding lower forehead, are interested in eyebrow lifts or correcting forehead protrusions. Therefore, they can simultaneously benefit from forehead reduction surgery along with correcting other forehead imperfections.

Even if men plan to have a hair transplant, shortening the forehead allows them to use the transplanted hair to increase hair density instead of advancing the hairline. Thus, forehead reduction surgery and hair transplantation complement each other.

Can forehead reduction surgery correct an asymmetrical hairline?

In most people, the hairline is slightly asymmetrical, but this asymmetry is usually not noticeable and therefore does not require correction. In individuals with a significantly asymmetrical hairline, it’s possible to reduce this asymmetry somewhat during forehead reduction surgery, but complete correction may not be achievable.

Can the width of the upper part of the face (narrowing the forehead) be reduced through surgery?

Almost all individuals with a wide upper part of the face due to a large distance between the hairline and the eyebrows also have a high forehead. Therefore, the surgeon can simultaneously reduce the height of the forehead and narrow the upper part of the forehead.

One of the most important signs of a youthful forehead is its appearance. Any sign on the forehead that suggests aging can reduce the beauty and attractiveness of the forehead. Wrinkles on the forehead, sagging eyebrows, receding hairline (due to hair loss) and a lengthening forehead, and the loss of muscle and fat tissue in the temple area are signs of aging on the forehead. To restore the attractiveness and beauty of the forehead, these signs must be eliminated or reduced, and in such cases, a forehead lift surgery may be appropriate.

Complications of Forehead Reduction

Although forehead reduction surgery is a safe procedure, like any other surgery, it can have complications. Each of these complications can be prevented or treated using specific methods.

These complications include bruising, pain, itching or numbness of the forehead skin, swelling, or the remaining surgical scar.

Post-Surgery Care

Given the nature of the surgery and the post-operative conditions, it is necessary to be aware of the exact post-operative care methods so that you can return to your normal life as soon as possible and also avoid specific complications resulting from the surgery. For this purpose, immediate post-surgery support will be provided to you by sending a care file and a phone call.

In simpler terms:

While forehead reduction surgery is generally safe, there are potential side effects like bruising, swelling, and scarring. To ensure a smooth recovery and minimize these risks, detailed post-surgery care instructions will be provided to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the effect of forehead reduction surgery last?

In women, forehead reduction surgery is permanent. However, in men who experience hair loss, if hair loss continues, the forehead will lengthen as the hairline recedes.

In most surgeries, including forehead reduction, some of the sensory nerve branches are cut during surgery, and after surgery, other nerve branches compensate for the sensation. Therefore, the sensation of the upper scalp will be different from before surgery.

Depending on the thickness and elasticity of the scalp, between 1 to 3 centimeters of the forehead can be shortened.

In forehead reduction, we make an incision in front of the hairline and pull the back tissues forward. How much these tissues move forward depends on the individual. Some people’s skin allows us to move it forward more and shorten the forehead more, but on average, in 90% of people, it is possible to move the hairline forward by 1 to 2.5 centimeters.

There are different methods for forehead reduction:
1)Hair transplantation, which is usually effective for men. In hair transplantation, the hairline is advanced to shorten the forehead.

2)Forehead reduction surgery, which means making an incision in front of the hairline and pulling the back tissues forward.

Experience shows that this method is not very suitable for women because the texture and thickness of the transplanted hair are different from the rest of the hair.

By shortening the forehead, we only lower the hairline and no asymmetry is corrected. In cases where the temples are very far back, the temple area can be pulled more during surgery.

Yes, it is possible to have hair transplanted to the incision site of forehead reduction surgery.

If a person has such a request, the maximum shortening can be considered for them. In some people, more than 1.5 centimeters may not be possible in one session, and larger amounts must be performed in a subsequent surgery.

Yes, it is possible in some people.

In fact, as long as there is swelling and the tissues have not healed, the forehead will be numb. It takes several weeks to several months for the swelling to subside and the numbness to go away.

In general, tissue repair is slower in smokers compared to non-smokers, and the tissue may be damaged. Therefore, it is best to stop smoking before surgery. It should be noted that the risk of scarring remains higher in smokers.

It depends on the skin type. Usually between one and three centimeters.

Yes, it is not necessary to perform a forehead reduction along with a brow lift and temple lift.
